Directions for a Healthy Heart

I have a confession to make.  I’ve always been the kind of person that acts first and reads directions later.  I like to think I’m doing better in this area as I get older but, if I’m honest, I still prefer speed and action over slower, thoughtful effort. As  you may know, sometimes doing things this way has negative repercussions. Earlier this spring, when weeds nearly covered our front yard, I decided to go to Lowes to get what I needed – weed

God Deposits in Our Hearts

Recently I endeavored to categorize all 750+ verses in the Bible pertaining to the heart.  It was rewarding to discover the dozens of rich aspects of the heart.   One such aspect of the heart is the idea of God putting deposits, plans and ideas into our hearts. First and best of all, as followers of Christ, God put a new heart in each of us at the moment of our salvation.  You have a new heart. I will give you a new heart and put a new spirit in you; I

Motivations of the Heart

The heart is often described as the inner self but it’s also known as the center of our motivations.  In other words, whatever you do or think, the underlying motivation or intent comes from your heart, not your mind. The Bible says that the word of God can discern the thoughts and intentions (motivations) of the heart. For the word of God is living and powerful, and sharper than any two-edged sword, piercing even to the division of soul and spirit, and

Sin

What is sin? It is the breaking of God’s law. It’s in the Bible, I John 3:4, NIV. “Everyone who sins breaks the law; in fact, sin is lawlessness.” I John 5:17, NIV says, “All wrongdoing is sin…” The basic principal of God’s law is summed up in one word—love. It’s in the Bible, Matthew 22:37-40, NIV. “Jesus replied: ‘Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind. This is the first

Sweet Salvation

God offers us salvation through Jesus. It’s in the Bible, Matthew 1:21, TLB. “And she will have a Son, and you shall name Him Jesus (meaning Savior), for He will save His people from their sins.” Acts 4:12, NIV says, “Salvation is found in no one else, for there is no other name under heaven given to men by which we must be saved.” Salvation means we receive eternal life if we enter into a personal relationship with God. It’s in the

True Love

Nothing can separate us from the love of God. It’s in the Bible, Romans 8:38-39, NIV. “For I am convinced that neither death nor life, neither angels nor demons, neither the present nor the future, nor any powers, neither height nor depth, nor anything else in all creation, will be able to separate us from the love of God that is in Christ Jesus our Lord.” God’s love is sacrificial. It’s in the Bible, John 3:16, NIV. “For God so loved the

Pain, Tears & Grief

God has promised an end to tears, death, sorrow, crying, and pain. It’s in the Bible, Revelation 21:4, TLB. “He will wipe away all tears from their eyes, and there shall be no more death, nor sorrow, nor crying, nor pain. All of that has gone forever.” Heaven will be a place of joy forever. It’s in the Bible, Isaiah 35:10, TLB. “These, the ransomed of the Lord, will go home along that road to Zion, singing the songs of everlasting joy.

Forgiveness

God is ready and waiting to forgive anyone who asks. It’s in the Bible, Psalm 86:5, TLB. “O Lord, you are so good and kind, so ready to forgive; so full of mercy for all who ask your aid.” On what did David rest his hope of forgiveness? It’s in the Bible, Psalm 51:1, NIV. “Have mercy on me, O God, according to Your unfailing love; according to Your great compassion blot out my transgressions.” How is God’s mercy measured? It’s in the
