Swinging for the piñata!

Remember trying to crack open the piñata at a friend’s birthday party? There it was, a thing of great value, swinging from a rope tied to a tree limb.

As a kid your only desire is to break it open. But you’re blind-folded, so you can’t ever hit the darn thing!

So a helpful parent comes along and does what all parents do at piñata parties.  First, they tell you to stop swinging (so they don’t get killed)! Then they calmly grab your shoulders from behind, push you a bit forward and position you in just the right place so you can swing your hardest…..then, scream for joy at what falls to the ground!

This is a picture of nearly all our faith journeys toward God….

We’re born blindfolded to (and, in fact opposed to) the eternal riches God has for us. We go through life swinging at anything in any direction hoping to hit something that will give us what we need.

We exhaust a lot of energy on tiny piñatas filled with non-sense that doesn’t really fill us up. Our fallen world system dulls our spiritual eyes and we end up swinging at things that don’t fill our deepest longings.

But we want what’s inside….not candy to feed our temporal needs, but truth and eternal love that can feed our eternal soul.

After stumbling around looking for God on our own and missing all the places we thought He was, a friend comes along and turns us to face the Father or to face some truth we need to hear.

He or she asks us to stop swinging at all the wrong things….they then get us re-oriented and centered so we can take the few steps needed to open up the best gift possible. I thank God for all the pastors, friends and family members who have turned my shoulders toward the prize.  And I thank God the Holy Spirit for directly turning me and working through others to get me there.

Are you ready to stop wasting cycles swinging at the wrong things?

Are you hungry for God’s best?

Do you have a friend who can grab your shoulders and steer you toward God?

If not, just ask God to turn you toward Him.

Many, LORD my God, are the wonders you have done, the things you planned for us. None can compare with you; were I to speak and tell of your deeds, they would be too many to declare. Psalm 40:5

Prayer

I pray that you and I will continue to allow others to enter our lives and recenter us and reposition us for all the wonders He has in store for us. Lord help me to be open to the direction and advise of godly men and women who can help me re-connect to you in a deeper way, so my soul can take in all the riches in your storehouse. In Jesus’ name, Amen
