My 40th high school reunion is coming up October 2019. Seeing familiar names on the reunion email, got me thinking about elementary and middle school. I began to reminisce about time gone by riding my bike to the park near our home and wandering through the nearby woods all day with friends Walt and Newman. ~ That same week a dear friend, David Gilley, died here in Atlanta. He and I had grown close and were collaborating on some …

I was at a retreat center recently on a cold, windy drizzly day. I had a raincoat, boots and a sweater but even with all that, I still didn’t want to wander outside too much. The dark colors, broken limbs, dead leaves, gray sky and harsh wind all reminded me of the seeming death in winter. Yet, in reality, things are just sleeping in the winter and spring will come. Green will emerge, grass will grow, the sun will warm …
May the soil of our hearts be soft so that his "seed" of love and truth can sink in deep, take root and flourish. …
The sooner professionals ask questions about how to balance excelling at work with meaning in life the sooner real life begins. I believe Randy’s book and his insightful interview format will help others more easily and wisely address this significant life challenge of meaning. By peering into the lives of professionals who have sought meaning in life, others can learn how they processed decisions about work/life balance, faith, family and purpose. Randy has done a great job of helping the …
At the entrance to Wal-Mart and other stores this time of year, you’ll hear the familiar Salvation Army bell ringing on behalf of the voiceless…for those in need. Perhaps you’ll be inclined to give an extra gift or two….maybe even bake something for a neighbor or donate items to a charity. This heart of giving to others is what Christmas foretells. Christ coming to earth to give the gift of salvation and redemption to each of us…..to bridge the gap …
One day while driving home from a meeting, as I approached the top of a hill, I was suddenly face-to-face with blinding sunlight. Everything became hazy with a yellow tint. In an instant, I was unable to see the normal colors of the world around me – everything was a goldish blur as the sun streamed in. I finally put on my sunglasses and was then able to see the full range of colors and I could stop squinting. At …
If you haven’t seen it, the TV show Undercover Boss is a refreshing and entertaining perspective on how Bosses come to better appreciate the people and processes that make up their business. In the show a CEO goes “undercover” (in disguise – see picture on left) usually taking on an entry-level job at their company in order to better understand what’s happening “out in the real world” where customers are. As a result of being out in the field, the CEO invariably …
Sitting on our patio recently among the beauty of nature, I looked around as the sun began to set and noticed how quiet it was. Like a magnet, I was drawn to the stillness of the moment. It was the lack of noise that quieted my heart, I am sure. That serene moment seemed to usher in a sense of the presence of God. It had been a long and trying several days, so the silence felt good. God is surely …
I met a lady recently who was, unfortunately, experiencing the pains of divorce. During our chat, I asked if she had children. Nearly instantly a smile a mile wide came over her, she became animated and nearly burst with pride….yes, she had a child, a young daughter. She went on to share all sorts of stories about her daughter’s mannerisms, her full-of-life personality and even her beautiful hair. Pride and love flowed from this mother in sharp contrast to the sadness of the topic of divorce …
I play golf 3-4 times per year, so everyone tends to understand when I hit the ball poorly. No one learns much about golf from watching me play and I don’t have much to show as a result of my playing…I shoot about a 100 (which for golf it not a good score). I really just enjoy the scenery, the camaraderie and the 3 or 4 good shots I hit during the game. I don’t make the time to practice as …
