I met a lady recently who was, unfortunately, experiencing the pains of divorce. During our chat, I asked if she had children. Nearly instantly a smile a mile wide came over her, she became animated and nearly burst with pride….yes, she had a child, a young daughter.
She went on to share all sorts of stories about her daughter’s mannerisms, her full-of-life personality and even her beautiful hair. Pride and love flowed from this mother in sharp contrast to the sadness of the topic of divorce .
Hearing this mother’s enthusiastic love for her child reminded me of how God must feel about us. While we experience tough situations in life, there is a fiercely jealous God who is madly in love with us….a God who thinks about us, who knows our full name and even the hairs on our head.
Whether you girls or boys or even if you have no children…this poem is to remind you of the truth of God’s love for you….you are loved like this mother loves her child.
The Child I Love
The girl I love her life exudes
She bounds both to and fro.
Her spirit seems to have no fences
Her eyes they twinkle like the stars
And fully light the senses.
She is my love
The heart of mine
I cherish her so deep.
She is both sweet and full of life
Her face my soul to leap.
No words can tell of how I feel
The love I have inside
For this my little angel girl
My joy I cannot hide.
But what to make of love so rare?
What does it lead me to?
Is it but a shadow of a greater love that’s due?
Some ancient mystery that never dies
Right before my very eyes.
An endless love that spills toward
A love from depths forever stored.
Remind me God on stone-like days,
When all around me fails
Of your lavish love for me
of your sure care along the way
Of your embrace I do desire
Lord bring to me today.
And when my child both hurts and cries
I run to her to give
A gentle loving kind embrace
so that her joy may live.
This too is the heart of God
So present at my side.
When like my child my head is low
He ever does abide.

Psalm 36: 5-9 (NIV)
Your love oh Lord reaches to the heavens, your faithfulness to the skies.
Your righteousness is like the mighty mountains, your justice like the great deep.
Oh, Lord you preserve both man and beast. How priceless is your unfailing love!
Both high and low among men find refuge in the shadow of your wings.
They feast on the aboundance of your house; you give them drink from your river of delights.
For with you is the fountain of life; in your light we see light.
